Introduction
The show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is a reality show supposed to be a real fashion
describing five gay men. It uses sexuality to make a position statement. The group of five
characters is presented as gay men. It is, nevertheless, notable that the Queer Eye for the Straight
Guy movie illustrates a severe misrepresentation of the LGBTQ+ community, a significantly
marginalized group. It can not only be described as the epitome of the commoditization of
sexuality but also a platform for gay men to be introduced to the broader community through an
idealized image that can be appealing to the public. The movie director created a homosexual
persona that fits into the conventional mold that gay men are expected align to attract more
viewers. The theme presented by the two streets, Gay Street and the Straight Street, is of
significance. They seem to deliver the message that the gay and straight people can find a
convergence point in the society. The street corner, therefore, gains a poignant role in bringing
the two groups together. The primary interest for the producer of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
is to gloss in profit. The show did attract attention and made a tidy profit. Making money is not
the problem with the show; the issue is the exploitation of a marginalized group. Critics,
however, have acclaimed the movie as a positive promotion and championing of gay rights and
the celebration of the existence of the minority group. It can, nevertheless, be argued that
whether the movie advocates the rights of the gay community or not, the exploitation of people
because of their sexuality is wrong and should be condemned.

Conclusion
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is a TV show that does not represent the individuality and
equality of the gay people nor is it part of the plot. The gay people are only used as props to
support the heteronormative narrative often presented by the mass media. The show, ostensibly,
aims at changing or improving the lives of heterosexual males. However, the cast seems to have
more gay men than heterosexual which beg the question; just how are the straight men are being
helped? The plot does not demonstrate any value benefits for the queer characters nor for the
straight men. It has been argued that the TV reality show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy does
not promote the interests of the gay community; instead, it is a capitalistic exploitation and
commoditization of the homosexual sexuality for profit. The gay community has been exposed to
many discriminations around the world but nowhere have they been exploited as they were in the
show. The mass media have a way of utilizing minority groups to achieve a certain agenda. The
argument is further buttressed by the acknowledgment made by Adorno and Horkheimer who
observed that in a "monopoly all mass culture is identical." Needless to say, the show does not
promote any gay issues, and nor does it offer any new knowledge on the promotion and
advocacy of the rights of homosexuals. It would have been interesting to see how it would have
turned out if the TV reality show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy had advanced or at least stood
up for the rights of the gay community, which continues to face discrimination in many fronts.
