The story, “A Man who was almost A Man”, is a story written by Richard Wright, which tends

to talks about an African American slave who is depicted to struggle in order to acquire respect.

With regards to the entire story line, it is seen that the main character is trying to acquire a gun in

order to deal with the existing racial stereotype that is facing. From a broad perspective, the

issues revolving around racial stereotype are brought forth depicted through character symbolism

and dialogue.

Racial stereotype is the dominant theme of the story, “A man who was almost a man”. The issue

of racial stereotype is depicted throughout Dave Saunders’ life. This with regards to the fact that

this character is actually trapped in a world here he is stripped off his economic and personal

power. As a slave, Dave perceives his life to revolve around a series of humiliation and abuse

which are tied to his racial affiliation. It is because of him being deprived off economic and

social power that he perceives himself not to have the ability to pursue his dreams. It is because

of this that he eventually desires to have a gun in order to gain control over others and eventually

become free, But in turn the gun come with additional responsibility. In a nutshell, it is realized

that Dave, is forced to overcome some of the racial stereotypes that befall him in order to

eventually become a man. All in all, it is realized that having a gun would actually have

introduced Dave to adulthood if only he would have been able to handle the extra responsibilities

that come with having a gun.

Conclusion

From a broad perspective, it is realized that racial stereotype is the core theme of the story. This

is with regards to the fact that Dave who is the main character in the story is seen to have gone

through quite a number of social and economic problems that are tied to his position being a

slave. As a black person, Dave is treated in a negative way a factor that makes him desire having

gun in order to eventually becomes an adult and free. The aspect of racial stereotype seems to

have a direct impact on events taking place in the story especially those that are influencing the

life of the main character.

In the story, “The Swimmer” by John Cheever, it is quite evident that the author does not just

state the theme of the story but actually expresses the theme as a good author. With the use of

metaphors and symbolism, the author tends to actually introduce different aspects of the theme

that directly relate to the events that are taking place in the story. The prominent use of allusion

and symbolism in the story tends to highlight the theme while at the same time augmenting the

poetic and artistic nature of the story.

With respect to the initial start of the story, it is noted that finding home by the main character in

the story actually boarded up. It is from this that one realizes that a sensation of unwelcoming

and coldness managed to take over. This is inconsideration of the fact that sudden misfortunes

actually started to come up from what was actually perceived to be a perfect life. In a nutshell,

the story The Swimmer tends to talk about a character know as Neddy Merrill; a male individual

who decided to swim through the pools of his county for him to reach his home. In this story, the

author tends to utilize symbolism that reflects upon Neddy’s natural environment which directly

represented his current situation. This is inconsideration of the fact that the main character in the

story was once highly regarded and ended up having significant misfortunes in his life. The

author clearly describes the cumulus clouds that had risen above the city as Neddy sat to listen to

the percussiveness of thunder. The storm in this case is actually brings forth symbolism as it

represents the unpleasant and rough changes that befall the main character’s life. The use of

symbolism in this case tends to introduce integral aspects of the theme of the story, putting in

mind that after the storm Neddy’s neighbors started to become unfriendly.

It is quite evident that the author of the story “The Swimmer” consistently uses symbolism and

metaphors as stylistic devices for enhancing the theme of the story. As a reader of the story, one

tends to notice a gradual shift of mood in the story due to the different stylistic devices that are

used in the story. It is because of effective use of symbolism and metaphors that it becomes

possible to understand some of the events that are being described by the author, with respect to

their significance to the entire story.

Lowell’s poem is actually a Petrarchan Sonnet that has a rhyme scheme of

ABBAABBACDCDCD”. With respect to the entire poem, symbolism has consistently been used

in order to develop a deeper meaning of the poet’s Ideas. In consideration of this factor, it is

realized that the first eight lines of the poem tend to consistently focus on the reflection of the

mind, to think of a period of happiness. The author in this case consistently focuses on issues

related to emotional connectedness to their loved one and therefore symbolism is introduced in

order to bring forth a deeper meaning of some of the underlying emotional feelings.

Symbolism is effectively depicted in the line, “You lie on the heart as a nest”. This particular line

tends to introduce a deeper meaning of the authors perspective regarding to the entire idea. It is

from this line that one tends to understand the meaning of the symbolism used as being, “You

have made my hear your home and peacefully settled down. Symbolism and metaphors have

been used side by side in this poem to emphasize on the grief that the author or poet had towards

his lost love. The line, “That all recurring joy is pain refined” is metaphoric in nature such that it

tends to compared joy with pain which has been made to be much greater than before.

In consideration of the entire structure of the poem, it is quite evident that the symbolism and

metaphors used in the poem tend to consistently enhance the theme of the poem. In a nutshell,

the poet in this case managed to use symbolism and metaphors in order to bring forth a deeper

meaning of the message that he was communicating through the poem. It is quite evident that the

author used symbolism more than metaphors in his poem in order to show the deep connection

that he had with his lost love. With a clear understanding of the ideas used in the poem it

becomes possible to actually comprehend why symbolism and metaphors are used side by side in

the poem, which results into the understanding of the theme of the poem. It is this case, clear that

poets tend to utilize stylistic devices in order to bring forth a deeper thought of their ideas to the

listener or reader of the poem. It is from this that different individuals tend to have different

interpretations of the intended deeper meaning of a poem based on how they interpret the

symbolism sentences or words used.

Postmodernism is a term that is extensively used to refer to literary and social cultural theory,

which is associated with the shift in perspective which tends to manifest in a variety of

disciplines such as literature, technology, social science, fashion and art. It is argued that the

general shift of postmodernism actually started in the late 1950s and with a high probability that

it is still continuing. With this in mind, it is realized that postmodernism is consistently

associated with the dehumanization and power shift that took place in the Second World War.

All in all it is realized that postmodernism actually tends to imply a significant relationship with

modernism. Modernism in this case, is an aesthetic movement which was actually vague in the

early 20

century. With respect to literary work, it is realized that postmodernism understands

that the grand narratives tend to negate, hide and silence contradictions, differences and

instabilities that tend to exist in any social system.

Kurt Vonnegut is known as one of the significant postmodernism writers during the 1960 and

70s in the United States. With this in mind, it is realized that Vonnegut is actually remembered

for his significant United States counterculture satirist voice. With respect to the manner in

which Vonnegut utilizes postmodernism in the literature that people read. One realizes that

Vonnegut’s work tend to contain a significant amount of dark humor and irony. Vonnegut

literature work tends not to be afraid of using these literary styles in addressing topics related to

the horror of the Second World War, oppression, paranoia. All this is with regards to the fact that

the Second World War was actually personal to Vonnegut, putting in mind that he served as a

soldier and was once a prisoner.

In consideration of the concepts identified in this particular context, it is realized that

postmodernism was significantly influenced by the Second World War. With this in mind, it
