The Treatment of Women of Middle Ages
Middle Ages was a period after the fall of Roman Empire at about 500-1500 CE. This
essay tries to explain the lives of woman were very hard at the Middle Ages. Middle Ages
women had different social roles such as mother, wife, nun, peasant, and abbess (Wood, 1970,
p.56-121). The ways in which women were treated changed drastically during this period of
Middle Ages as follows:
Those women who came from poor backgrounds were require to work along with their
husbands in order to bring to raise more income to support their household due to their multiple
children. Women could assist their husbands plough field or haul hay. Underprivileged women
did not wear shoes, so they had to walk barefooted and during winter periods they would wrap
their bodies in sheets to them from harsh weather conditions. Their children accompanied them
to their places of work because the could not afford nannies. Even wealthy women were to obey
men and talk unless asked to. The wealthy women were to continue taking care of the businesses
after their husbands had passed away. The nannies hired by wealthy women were require to
breast feed their babies.

The only leadership position women could occupy at this time was to became nuns for
them to get educated and gain some privileges. The was the only opportunity poor women were
given to properly get educated. By becoming a nun woman could not bear children but they
could practice farming and own their own homesteads. Many poor families who had many
daughters made them nun because they could not afford to raise them and they would be
educated. But men view them as useless because they could not bear children (Mundy, 1980.
p.207-223).
Upon marriage, women were forced to relinquish their properties to their husbands,
giving up her own rights. Unmarried women were required to wear their air down but married
women to wear linen to cover up their hair to represent modesty and decency. Women could not
pick their husbands rather arranged by family members based on the economic reasons.
Marriages were not established on emotions or love. The poor men and women were allowed to
marry because they would lose nothing. The right age to get married during the middle ages
period was 12 years for women due to expected life span. Women could not divorce their
husbands after being unified by the church but rather commit wholly to their husbands.
Women were treated harshly because that had no rights after they get married because
they could lose their property to their husbands. Women who engage in witchery were burn and
beaten badly. Women lost part of their grains to pay taxes. The wealthy men could hire women

by paying them in advance despite the quantity of work. Women were value in terms of dowry
which was paid in monetary value or land hence source of wealth.
In conclusion, during the period of Middle Ages, women were treated unfairly. The
women were viewed by men as impure due to the menstrual cycles. Christianity protected
women and provided them an opportunity to get an education. The women could not divorce
their husbands but rather were require to commit and obey. Women were required to give birth
to multiple children who would provide cheap labour.
