The only leadership position women could occupy at this time was to became nuns for
them to get educated and gain some privileges. The was the only opportunity poor women were
given to properly get educated. By becoming a nun woman could not bear children but they
could practice farming and own their own homesteads. Many poor families who had many
daughters made them nun because they could not afford to raise them and they would be
educated. But men view them as useless because they could not bear children (Mundy, 1980.
p.207-223).
Upon marriage, women were forced to relinquish their properties to their husbands,
giving up her own rights. Unmarried women were required to wear their air down but married
women to wear linen to cover up their hair to represent modesty and decency. Women could not
pick their husbands rather arranged by family members based on the economic reasons.
Marriages were not established on emotions or love. The poor men and women were allowed to
marry because they would lose nothing. The right age to get married during the middle ages
period was 12 years for women due to expected life span. Women could not divorce their
husbands after being unified by the church but rather commit wholly to their husbands.
Women were treated harshly because that had no rights after they get married because
they could lose their property to their husbands. Women who engage in witchery were burn and
beaten badly. Women lost part of their grains to pay taxes. The wealthy men could hire women
