Therapeutic communication and relationships enable nurses to meet their patients’ healthcare
needs which could include encouragement, information or support. It plays an essential role in
promoting delivery of quality services especially in chronic and complex care. It is also
extremely beneficial when handling clients with special needs. This paper evaluates various
studies conducted on the effect of therapeutic communication and relationships in prolonged,
intricate caution or when dealing with patients who have special needs. Although quality patient-
nurse relationship is critical in improving health outcomes, it requires consistency to make it
effective.

chronic conditions are more manageable where a quality relationship is established between care

same with the patient’s support system such as relatives. Trust has to be established with the
patient suffering from a chronic condition and also those around them.

relationships between care providers and patients evolve through different stages as trust and
familiarity increases. This article also notes that one way of cultivating a healthy healthcare
relationship is to have open communication. Additionally, it adds that care providers need to be
emotionally involved when dealing with their patients.

instance, they have to be keen to note changes or concerns in the patient. The articles states that
nurses must also be able to develop a personalized care plan for the patient. They must be
intentional and deliberate about building a healthy relationship with their patients.
