As a nurse educator, I would help the clinical practice council as well as the new staff
education director understand that safety of patients is the cornerstone of high quality healthcare.
I would explain that when patients are guaranteed of safety during treatment, then high quality of
medical care is achieved. Also, I would do so by categorically explaining to them that all of
nurses need to have the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude of handling patients in order to
promote safety and quality in the health care sector(qsen.org, 2017).
I would cite the example of the costly high infection rate in surgical patients at St. Louis
Medical Center and the lack of concern of psychological needs of patients as something that
should never ever be portrayed by nurses and medical professionals. In fact, the case of St. Louis
Medical Center would serve as the perfect example to remind the director and staff that safety;
quality and cost go hand in hand. I would explain thatcostly medical centers need to provide high
standards of quality as well as safety that match the amount of money paid by patients. High
standardlevels of both quality and safety include having the much needed concern for
psychological needs, rights and privileges of patients.
In demonstrating the importance of nursing care in addressing the issue of quality, safety
and cost, I would practically take the director and staff around St Louis Medical Center in order
for them to see how nursing care has been ignored by the health care facility. After showing
them around, I would categorically explain that the health care facility needs much improved
nursing care because nursing care encompasses the safety and quality of medical care given to
patients.
