Introduction
In 1988, through the years that sexual adventurous did not travel very far and beyond
Spain, Pedro Almodóvar does score some main international hits mostly on how he was handling
sex and cinema. It was the best time that he had to show his new profound capabilities of
including his particular theme in his movies. He headed further in the mainstream by following
women on The Verge with Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!
1
The movie is a twisted romantic comedy
that a guy that punches a lady so hard to make her unconscious. The audience is rather treated to
some deep twist in the story whereby instead of the audience witnessing some form of
consensual bondage they are offered a subdued and rather disturbing form of scenery about a
woman that falls in love with the one that abducted her
2
. Moreover, the film was not capped with
X rating though it was due to a scene bathtub that was meant to acknowledge the presence of
vaginas and female masturbation.
Sex and Violence
The movie revolves around a former psych-ward inmate that is named Ricky ends breaking
into an apartment of a former porn star that had turned into to being a legit actress. He ties the
lady down as he waits for her to requisite his love. There is a form of feminism justification in
the ways in which Almodóvar keeps up with Ricky’s behavior suggesting that is was okay to
subdue a woman as long as one has some sincere passion in existence. Ricky does refrain from
raping Mariac which would then stain the strange ethical code. The film cinematic is full of

comedy scenes where the actor kidnaps a former pornography star slaps her and get her to bed
only top tell her that she wants her to marry him where they shall have a future family together.
The films revolve around a certain theme where Bandera’s performances go round one particular
direction (creepy to charming). When Ricky does return from being beaten by his friends from a
drug dealer joint he is bloody and battered. Instead, he is treatedwith compassion by the
abducted. The film is unraveling a lot since at some point Marina asks that she be tied down so
as to refrain her from fleeing. We get to see a lot of Ricky’s seduction techniques that are filled
with very erotic and sometimes being bordered on torture techniques.
With the help of a faultless cast and better outstanding camera work by one Jose Luis
Alcaine, Almodóvar can reveal the fragility of the hardened characters. It is confusing since the
abducted is the one that initiates sex sometimes later after attending to the wounds of Ricky. She
is so careful not to touch the sore spots that Ricky has gotten from his earlier beating. Their
lovemaking is gentle and sensual where instead of Marina escaping when given a chance she
insists that she be tied up. The film has on various occasions been misunderstood for a vague
cinematic representation that is driven by sex and violence. However, that point can be argued
since Almodóvar has ensured that it retains its sensibility of being a good film that has its
themes. The viewers’ community takes such a tale as a confusing mix where the abductor has
sexual relations with the abducted. From the onset, Ricky was set on torturing Marin with
various slanderous language, but rather he carefully chooses his language by choosing
theromantic tone. He is scheduled to subdue the lady who was a former porn star into love and
later family. As a society should embrace such the motive rather than being subjected to
criticism. The creator of the film has a good motive for the female figure who he portrays as a
tender and caring embodiment which has profound skills when it comes to lovemaking. We can
4
see a different angle of how the society views such incidences portrayed in the film; the director
does make clear indication of how media is consumed by various attributions of lies, for
example, Marina who has left the world of pornography is still considered to be an object of
sexual desire. The film opens the mind of many that do not believe that love can come out of
sexual desire.
Through various readings, it is clear that this movie has been misunderstood. It is not a
glorification of violence; it is also not S/M Bondage (that happens between two consenting
parties). The message is not entangled in the belief that if you tie and beat a woman, she will
love you in return. This is actually about two people that have been able to master their life.
Ricky for one is a disturbed individual and Marina, on the other hand, is a drug addicted porn
star; we can see that they are meant for each other
3
. In the end through a very entertaining sexual
engagement is true that they have found each other companies suitable. The attitude that the male
character has on women and life is not acceptable. He does not get another way of getting what
he wants in life. The female character does seem to fall in love with the man cinematic plays
maybe because she has never felt if there is any other person that has ever cared for her.
Some of the critics have actualized the growing love of Marina for her abductor is a form
of being infected with Stockholm syndrome where the victims mostly end up sliding into their
predator's arms
4
. However, as the film unravels through the sex scene it and after the talk, it is
clear that Marina is a young woman that has set her eyes on the road to recovery. Where Ricky
will also have a better job and become a model husband. It is fair for the director Almodóvar to

arrange for sexual situations that bound their possibilities that end up forcing them to
compromise. Love in the film revolves around joyful madness such as sexual desires as such the
ways in which Ricky is convinced to have sex with the victim is because he desires the act. The
facts about sex being sacred that should occur between couples havebeen twisted in the film
where the ones that are involved in the action have their agendas of tormenting each other that
ends up in some form of love. However, it is important to note that the kidnapper does not
entirely seduce the woman into grand passion but rather it is coupled with various cinematic
scenes of compassion and care. The movie on the downside aspect irritates since it takes too long
to reach its romantic high tone. It seems to have a fairly convincing conclusion.
Tie me up! Tie me down! And Culture
The film has a cultural value represented as a piece of the position of the Western World in
the 90’s. It is important to mention hat given that that is the aspect that elevates the film into a
classic by its own rights. The truth in this is revealed through repetitive viewing of the film
where different perceptions will form in one’s mind; hence, the film becomes more than what
one could just remember. In fact, one realizes the increase in its value leading to the temptation
of being described by an adjective that is full of ambiguity; underrated.
Given that the film has been set in the very colorful world, the audience is could imagine
the protagonist in the movie
5
. However, the movie introduces a mental patient, Ricky who has
been released from the clinic and he makes up his mind to go and only find the love of his life,
this was a former porn star, Marina, who at one time they shared a casual tryst. On finding her,
he forcefully kidnaps her since she does not have any idea of who Ricky would be. It is at this

6
juncture that the film poses a satirical horror in the audience. Some are pushed to conclude that
love is nothing other than insanity in its simplest definition.
The film director poses with clear observation on the way media has been consumed.
Marina has just left the world of pornography but Ricky still sees that his sexual desire can be
satisfied by her. Here, it is ardently made clear that the definition of love and pornography is
definite in the beholder’s eye
6
. In as much as one may view the film outside the cultural context
representing a particular movement, then apparently, the view will be a demonstration of the
differences amid the American artistic censorship along with the Spanish libertarianism
7
. A
conflict of libertarianism which sees absolute freedom of the artist as inevitable consequence of
democracy, with the regulative pragmatism in US that subordinates artistic autonomy to the
commercial well-being.
Looking at the respective social and sexual politics of Spain and United States, it is sfound
that there is a great critical preoccupation for Almodovar film in America. Therefore, the cultural
lens through which the film was viewed is important to be examined before there is any
conclusion in terms of rating and criticism
8
. By so doing it reveals that the film uncovers a
nuance understanding of Spain asd well as Spanish culture that ;lies without the film whoile at
the same time making a display of the levels of sexual repression as well as cultural rigidity in
the American context that the critics are not aware of.

Conclusion
To sum up, it is indeed true that the producer did craft the film carefully not taking note of
the various critics that disliked the movie at its premiere. For a film that was done that long ago
seems to be blessed with some impressive cinematic scenes that can only be gotten by careful
use of imagery and another aspect of cinematography. Sex, on one hand, seems to be the only
concept that has brought the two characters together, on the contrary, through actual
investigation it can be seen that love has grown through the film where the Marina and Ricky fall
in love where through that love they are ready to become better persons for each other. The
victim is a pornography star who falls in the arms of a disturbed man who encourages the
weaknesses of the victim by going for drugs where he ends up being beaten. Through such scene
is when Marina with no doubt realizes the love that the man has for her. Almodóvar has indeed
actualized the target that he was hoping the viewer would capture. If one watches the movie with
an open mind and at most try to see the beneath surface of the manner in which the film has been
plotted, and then one is bound to become captivated by the films beauty.
