Introduction.

In our day to day activities, we are faced with issues that demand us to think critically

in order to make decisions that are moral or that does not harm us or the people we are living

with. This can be expressed in our actions, for instance, there are times we decide to do

something that has a mutual benefit between us and our friend. Moral ethics are decisions and

actions that we take to avoid any harm to ourselves and also to our friends and family

members. Social issues involve the issues that arise in the way we communicate and how we

interact with others. These social issues and moral issues are reflected in the characters of the

movies and also in characters presented in the novels. The characters are involved in a

thoughtful decision and sometimes they are presented in a dilemma and try to make decisions

that they think they are right to them and also to others. This paper is a discussion of the

internal monologue of the characters in the first chapter of the book Tomorrow When the

War Began and how they think before making decisions.

Tomorrow When the War Began is a book based on a movie under the same title. The

book talks about the Ellie who is the narrator and her friends Corrie, Robyn, Homer, Chris,

Kelvin, and Fiona. It starts with the narrator writing the story about their camp. Ellie who is

given the work to write their experiences has thought about how to handle the work and a

how she should. She has work to write while at the same time the presence of her friend is

creating some disturbances that may prevent her from writing a quality work. She thinks

about sending them away and writing the work. To her this is reasonable and a moral ethics

because doing so won’t affect any of the members. The members will go out and she will

write a quality paper with their experiences. However, it may be a social issue since some of

her friends may take it as being rude to chase them and it could be better in if she could find a

place to write. On the other hand, Chris who is jealous of Ellie writing the story have the

thoughts about why he can’t be the one to write the story, but he also knows that he came to

the story too late and Ellie s is the one who came up with the ideas of camping. This is a

social issue as they could have understood each other.

In the story written by Ellie about the how she was successful in convincing her

friend’s parent about the trip, we get moral ethics and social issues. For instance, the idea of

Ellie camping with Corrie is a social issue that is it will help build social ties but on the other

hand, their parent gives them a condition of having a group of friend to go with them during

camping other than going alone. This is a moral ethics since their parent knows with a group

of friends they can behave and their welfare is guaranteed as compared to when they camp

alone.

When Chris and his dad visit Ellie’s family, Ellie asks Chris if he can join them in

camping but Chris dad refuses because he finds its better if his son could stay at home when

they camp. Ellie then visits Homer and find him repairing a water valve, her things that if she

helps him doing the work of carrying some water to the pump will help win him to agree with

the idea of camping. She helps carry some water and later tells him about the camp, basically,

it is a social event and Homer cannot disagree with the idea of camping since it creates social

ties between them. Corrie on the other hand talks with Kelvin who has already planned to go

to the farm show instead but he is convinced and agree. Kelvin must have thought about the

two ideas whether to go to camps with these friends or go to the farm show as he had

planned. But he is convinced and chose to join friends because of social connections.

Interior monologue is also seen when Fiona parents decide must meet Ellie mother for

them to allow Fiona to join Ellie in camping. Here Fiona parent action is a moral ethics where

they have to make sure that the camping is allowed by Ellie’s parents. They know that

children may plan about camping which may not be allowed by their parent because of moral

and security issues. They agree with the idea of camping after Ellie’s parent confirms that

they have allowed them to camp. It is also a social issue when the two parents connect.

Through this, a social connection is created between the families involved.

Lee who has previously planned to play in the concert on the commemoration day

make a decision to join Ellie and her friend in camping because of social connections and

social issues. Joining Ellie and her friend will make their friendship stronger and also have

social ties with them. Lee thinks about it and decides to forgo playing in the commemoration

day and join the camping group. Ellie then uses her persuasion power to convince Robyn’s

dad to allow Robyn to join them. Robyn’s dad thinks about the idea and allows him to join

them after he sees there are moral issues if the camping activity will be done by several

people.
