Introduction
Did you know that female astronauts exist? That would be the best way to introduce the
nonfiction book, Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream, to the children. This
would attract their attention to listen to what the book is all about (Zarnowski & Turkel, 2012).
They would learn about science which has proved that men and women are more or less equals
supported by the 13 women who dared becoming astronauts. This is because many people
believe that this is all men type of career where there are no women involved (Stone, 2011).
Using this book the students would be able to learn about astronomy, a science that
studies the celestial objects and phenomena. For one to be an astronaut then they should have the
courage, be in top shape physically, be exceptional at flying, be resistant to stress and not
forgetting being intelligent (Stone, 2011). But there was another unsaid rule that was being
imposed when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA was launched; one
had to be a man (Stone, 2011). Therefore, this book informs the young readers that there were
women who existed behind the scenes and were pretty and equally qualified just like their male
counterparts.
The questions that the students would ask were what astronomy meant and what the
astronaut was involved in. They were answered by the description which described that they
were persons who were trained to pilot, command or serve as spacecraft members. The story
was an eye-opener to the children who were curious to know what being an astronaut meant and
were also shocked to learn that there were women astronauts in the male-dominated field. The 13
women who are part of NASA defy all odds in their pursuit of being Astronauts (Stone, 2011.

The books also enlighten the children, who were born during an era where women have been
granted equal rights, and there are myriad of groups all over the world championing for women
empowerment. It was a different scenario way back in the 1960’s as women were perceived to as
being less inferior to the men and were regarded as mothers and wives. Most of the plum jobs
and roles belonged to men who were perceived as superior beings.
After the brief description of astronomy and the astronauts, the story was then narrated to
the children who at the time had an idea of the book. They were able to discover that at the said
time women were not allowed to play professional sports, could not report news on media
stations, could not get loans or rent cars without a man’s consent. Women could not fly jets, and
there were neither police officers. This all indicated that it was a man’s world and there was no
room for women astronauts either (Stone, 2011).
The students the claimed that they were not able to understand how the women were not
able to take part publicly in the space missions. This is because the 13 women were determined
even though they were taken through various training and drills as the males one and at times
even more challenging ones and they were able to sail through (Stone, 2011). This showed that
they were all equal beings and what a man could do a woman could do too amid the blatant
prejudicial period.
Although NASA leadership failed to accept the women’s effort by failing to honor them
or grant them the opportunity to take part publicly in NASA events as they argued that they were
truly ahead of time, they still left a legacy that is to be admired (Stone, 2011). The children were
now able to understand why the 13 women were never allowed to take part in any space mission.

Small girls reading the book can be greatly inspired by them and be encouraged to do
better than them since so much water has passed under the bridge and the shoe is on the other
foot (Zarnowski & Turkel, 2012). Women now have equal opportunities as their male
colleagues, and it is also argued that women make better astronauts because they weigh less and
consume less oxygen than men. I was able to understand that both males and females deserve
equal opportunities and no one should be discriminated because of their gender.
Conclusion
This book would greatly change the thoughts of small children especially girls who have
always thought that they are less equipped to face life challenges (Zarnowski & Turkel, 2012).
This will encourage them to work harder just like the 13 women who almost became astronauts
only for the NASA leadership to subjugate them (Stone, 2011).
