Introduction
Did you know that female astronauts exist? That would be the best way to introduce the
nonfiction book, Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream, to the children. This
would attract their attention to listen to what the book is all about (Zarnowski & Turkel, 2012).
They would learn about science which has proved that men and women are more or less equals
supported by the 13 women who dared becoming astronauts. This is because many people
believe that this is all men type of career where there are no women involved (Stone, 2011).
Using this book the students would be able to learn about astronomy, a science that
studies the celestial objects and phenomena. For one to be an astronaut then they should have the
courage, be in top shape physically, be exceptional at flying, be resistant to stress and not
forgetting being intelligent (Stone, 2011). But there was another unsaid rule that was being
imposed when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA was launched; one
had to be a man (Stone, 2011). Therefore, this book informs the young readers that there were
women who existed behind the scenes and were pretty and equally qualified just like their male
counterparts.
The questions that the students would ask were what astronomy meant and what the
astronaut was involved in. They were answered by the description which described that they
were persons who were trained to pilot, command or serve as spacecraft members. The story
was an eye-opener to the children who were curious to know what being an astronaut meant and
were also shocked to learn that there were women astronauts in the male-dominated field. The 13
women who are part of NASA defy all odds in their pursuit of being Astronauts (Stone, 2011.
