Character Analysis Truth and Bright Water
A critical analysis of the novel by truth and bright water will reveal the intentional way in
which the author, Thomas King, has created the characters and the populace in the story. The
main idea that has been proposed by the artist is the idea that within every individual there is the
quest or struggle to restore honor and certainty. Hence the artist uses the characters such as Lum,
Aunt Cassie, and Monroe to propel the main thought or idea that the novel is addressing. During
the interaction with the characters, we discover that there is a continuous development of these
characters through the story with is mainly demonstrated by the choices and actions that the
currents must make and how they continuously renew their reputation. These essay will critically
analyze the attributes of some of the characters as portrayed by Thomas King.
The character of Aunty Cassie was developed by Thomas King to be broken and
mysterious. That elements of Cassie life has been presented by the fact that very few family
members only know Cassie daily endeavors. The tattoo on Cassie's hand with the written initials
"AIM" on the knuckles made the matters was for Cassie and people thought, especially
Tecumseh thought the initials meant American Indian Movement. However, the meaning of the
initials as thought by Tecumseh later proved not to be a valid story as there was more than what
they assumed that had not been discovered concerning Aunty Cassie. Aunt Cassie was most of
the time taken by her own words of lies, which were her new ideal way of living. Tecumseh was

never told the truth directly by his Aunt, but he depended on insinuations. The fact that the tattoo
in that Aunt Cassie had a new meaning was understood by Tecumseh when on one of the
occasion his Aunt was drunk she suggested the same (King, 242).Due to curiosity, Tecumseh
had written the words on his hands as they appeared on the hands of Aunt Cassie and checked
them on the mirror and would later understand the true meaning of the initials that Aunt Cassie
has in the arms to mean. When the Initials would then appear as Mia Tecumseh would think that
the initials were the name of the girl that her maternal grandmother and Aunt were all speaking
about. However, the thought would not last long as Tecumseh will be thrown in the wrong
direction by Cassie the presence of the three baby suitcase that Cassie had. Tecumseh would
wrongly assume that her Aunt Cassie was pregnant and even suggested to her mother to give
Aunt Cassie some of her baby clothes (King, 218).In the long run, he never finds out the reality
of Mia and the reality of the baby clothes. The fact that even the readers are left guessing what
happened to the character Aunt Cassie solidifies the author's assertions that Aunt Cassie indeed
presented a character who had a broken and mysterious life
Aunt Cassie was portrayed by the Thomas Kind, the author as a very tenacious
individual. The character in the novel starts out as a side character but develops into of the most
important aspect that in the long run live to relay the real message of the artist. The fact that Aunt
Cassie struggles to restore her ordinary sense and gain back honor is the reason why he maybe
critically analyzed as a tenacious character. The characteristics mentioned above can be critically
examined on the two aspects of Aunt Cassie's life that have been presented above. It can be
analyzed in the element of Aunt Cassie life that has been portrayed to us as an individual who
lived in the word of Utopia and as an individual who existed in the real world. As an individual

who lived in the idealism world we so the resolve or tenacious character of Aunt Cassie of
refusing to believe that indeed Mia was no more by facts that he tattoos her body with the initials
of Mia. He even goes ahead and keeps Mia clothes despite the fact that she was no more. The
climax of this character is viewed when he sends Tecumseh presents of a baby girl. In real life,
her tenacious nature is significantly manifested when he decides to accept that Mia was no more
and even burn the baby clothes. The practice portrays the mental strength and belief in life that
Cassie had because she does not take her life compared to Lum who was suffering from the same
fate. From that, we can quickly conclude the fact that indeed Aunt Cassie had a tenacious
character
There is the character of idealist of impractical persona that has been portrayed in the
novel in the interactions between the two characters Aunt Cassie and Lum. The Utopian thought
had been created Lum and Aunt Cassie made it difficult for them to exist in the world of realism.
The two characters consistently deviate from the truth a factor which ends up destroying them.
The facts can deduce from the action that happened during Aunt Cassia's travels around the
world. She could send Tecumseh presents that were meant for a little a girl such as a doll with
dark hair and a dark blue velvet dress, Anne of Green Gables, and a box with a mirror in the lid
and little drawers that pulled out (King, 125).It is important to note that by sending Tecumseh
what was meant for Mia was a way of Aunt Cassie of integrating his sword of utopia; In his
idealism world, Mia still existed hence the presence was in the real sense send to Mia, with the
realism world in which Mia did not live. Aunt Cassie would come back to the ideal life after it
becomes evident that the truth about Mia was causing her severe pain that she needed to deal
with to deal with to live a healthy life. The return of Aunt Cassie to the realism is symbolized by
the action of Aunt Cassie letting go of the pieces of clothing into the fire (King, 260).

Aunt Cassie that has been portrayed in the new truth and bright water as the dauntless
character, there is an interaction of characterization between Aunt Cassie and Lum. However, it
is important to note that the difference between the idealist character that is portrayed by Lum
and one that is characterized by Aunt Cassie is the fact that the character that is represented by
Lum does not create chaos in Lum's life but death. The event an experience that is faced by two
similar characters make one character to emerge stronger and the other role to commit suicide
indicate that the former character is much stronger than the later respectively. Lum believed that
his mother was still alive has a way of coping up with the life that he lived and hence it had a
very immediate impact on his ideal life. Consequently, Lum developed running away from his
abusive father as a way of serving himself. However, when it finally dawned on him that indeed
his mother was no longer alive, he believed that his mother might have been back was shattered
and the real life was so hard for Lum because he could no longer hold on to his life of idealism.
The stress and devastation would ultimately make her take her own life. The deviation in this
interaction of idealist character between Aunt Cassie and Lum is that while the truth made Aunt
Cassie strong and allowed him to move on to more real life, it shattered Lum's life who saw no
other option but to commit suicide.
In conclusion, the author king has critically portrayed the character of Cassie as a
character in the novel that develops. King as use Cassie to tell the audience of the fact that
indeed human being can change from being emotionally weak and fragile to be strong. He
exceptionally does these by critical portraying Aunt Cassie as a broken and mysterious character
but later develops the character trait from broken and strange to idealism and lastly to a very
tough character. It is imperative to note that King does these to indicate to the audience how a
role can develop in real life.
