However, at the end of the story, Calixta becomes more caring and loving to her
husband; she realizes her mistake and does not allow pride to consume her. The
extramarital affair they have makes her regret the consequences, thus, valuing her
marriage more. Indeed, it appears that rather than the relationship destroying their
marriages, it helps to improve things. It may be true, but she suffers psychologically.
Through these two characters, the story shows that men get to benefit from the
extramarital affair at the expense of their wives, something which is wrong in our current
society. Although the story ends with all the characters seeming happy, it accurately
depicts the problems that exist in marriages and places women on the bitter end of it.
The issue of machismo is indeed more in “Lady with the Dog.” Dmitri has a wife,
but he utterly “dislikes her so much.” He considers her to be intelligent “while he
privately considered her of limited intelligence, narrow-minded, dowdy, was afraid of her
and did not like to be at home” but is completely unhappy with her. Although he has a
12-year daughter and two sons, Dmitri cheats on his wife with every chance that he gets.
Although Dmitri has many affairs, he despises women and calls them ‘inferior race.’
To be precise, Dmitri and Anna meet in a public garden and become intimate.
They start having an affair but later on Von Dideritis, Anna’s husband tells her to return
home. Anna leaves, and Dmitri is left a distraught man. Anna is not entirely sad since
she believes that by sleeping with Dmitri, Dmitri has lost all the respect that he had for
her. In this regard, sexism enhances males’ pride while leaving the women emotionally
ruined.
