According to Rotenberg, the argument is essential in a democratic process because

democracy involves letting the citizens speak up what is in their minds. This, many at times

involve disagreements in opinions thus to come up with a solution in a democratic way, the

two parties must argue and come to an agreement, thus democracy.

It is an implicit dialogue because it involves two opinions expressed by two parties that both

think they are right hence after the argument, either of them might be the one on the right

side, while at times both of them.

A warrant in an argument works in a way that it should be able to convince the other party

that the source of the information for supporting the argument is very reliable. This should be

their minds. That is when it becomes a warrant.

8. Who is Stephen Toulmin?

He is the influential philosophers behind an analytical approach of analysing various

arguments, known as the Toulmin Model of Argumentation. His principle was based on three

elements of argument namely; claim, support and warrant.

i. The claim of fact- The issue of global warming is so serious that it requires an

immediate address.

ii. The claim of Policy- The minimum age for obtaining a driver’s licence must be 18

years.

iii. The claim of Value- The killing of citizens by terrorists is a cruel act.

The question one needs to be asking another while tackling arguments in school is the real

reason why people have to study arguments. Other statements made evolve around this

question of why one takes their time to study arguments. To some, this might not be a

sensible question to ask.

Seldom often. The ratio is about 2:2. This is because the colloquial argument is common

among the semi illiterate and fully illiterate while Rottenberg’s method is majorly applicable

to those that are literate.
