Was America Right to Drop the Atomic Bombs on Japan?
America was right to drop the bomb in Japan. Like the rest of the world, the United
States was fighting to end the dark era of human history. The bomb was the only way to reduce
the number of casualties in the war. It was meant to shorten the war by creating a great impact on
a given area.
America had suffered a loss of around 418000 lives. The death toll was feared to continue
if no appropriate measures were put in place. The 135000 people sacrificed in Japan would at
least prevent the loss of other thousands of Americans in invading Japanese troops. As much as
the act was a grave consequence, the United States was justified to drop it.
America had suffered over 75000 causalities as it tried to capture Iwo Jima and Okinawa
from the hostile enemy. Japan was unwilling to surrender at any cost. Reviews on the number of
the dead and affected Americans had risen to almost three million. The war was still proceeding
with vigor and America could no longer sustain further casualties. Harry Truman was faced with
an unprecedented gravity decision to unleash the most horrible weapon ever imagined at that
time (Paulin 18-49).
Downfall by Frank Richard is a revelation of the Japanese action and sacrifice in relation
to the war. The book confirms that Emperor Hirohito would not surrender even after the

Hiroshima bombing. The bombing of Nagasaki was the only insight for the emperor to believe
that America had other several bombs of the same intensity. It was only after this second
bombing that Hirohito issued a monumental decree to his people to surrender. Even so, other
militants planned to destroy his surrender speech and assassinate him to continue the war (Frank
& Stanely 592). It is strong evidence that the war, if it not for the bombing, would have claimed
the lives of other millions of people.
The conclusion to drop the bomb was entirely military. It saved both American and
Japanese lives. A prolonged war was not a decision to be made in any way. Peace talks had
failed, and the Japanese hostility was on the rise. The bomb ended the most destructive war in
history.
