We are All Cyborgs now: video of TED Women 2010
Amber analyzes the different behaviors exhibited by people due to the invention of technology.
She is a cyborg anthropologist where she compares our recent behavior and use of technology to
be because we are becoming cyborgs. In the video, she explains that as human beings it is
common for us to look for new ways to explore the unknown. This can be seen in the different
excavations that people go to as well as the venturing into space and getting to other planets.
Technology has provided at the different opportunity for different people all over the world
whereby we are all able to access the internet and develop another self-online. She explains that
we become cyborgs whenever we look at our screens on TV or click on our smartphones where
we all engage in feeding the other self that you have created.
Amber explains that the technology is both helpful and destructive. This she says depends on
how we let it affect our lives. For example, if we engage technology in a manner that negatively
impacts our lives, rather than helps us it distracts us from the important things we need to focus
on. The most important technology is technology that helps improve our lives and make our
lives easier. This is true as even though social networks help us engage more and interact more
with people from all over the world we all still have our primary lives’ that we need to live to the
fullest. As such we need technology that helps in making this life easier. She also explains that
technology is only helpful when we take a downtime to be able to collect ourselves and
reorganize ourselves such that we are not lost in improving our secondary self but also take time
to improve our primary self.
Amber mainly focuses on teenagers and adolescents who are more engaged with the use of new
internet applications as well as new technological devices. In the video, Amber focuses on
showing that technology is not harmful, but we should be able to use it to improve our lives. As
we now rely on the external brain which is the mobile phones and computers to help in
communicating and even live out our lives, it is important for us to ensure that our screen is
staring and button clicking selves use the technology and the internet to connect rather than let it
conquer us.
I agree with amber's analogy as she shows that the internet and technology are not negative
aspects however our use of the internet resulting in negative influences will impact us all. It is
true that the internet allows us to form an external self. However, it is important for us to learn to
maintain these selves the same way that we maintain a primary self which is our actual lives.
Understanding this will ensure that rather than become cyborgs we become technology users
who take advantage of the technology available. The same restrictions we may apply to our
actual lives should be applied online which is contrary to what most people do as they view the
online platform as a way for them to reinvent themselves. People thus forget that in the new
selves they created online, they still need to apply the same rules to that life.
