Usefulness of Websites as Teaching Tool

The internet is one of the most significant technological advancement of the modern era.

The internet has made the world turn into a small global village. The internet and further the

invention of the World Wide Web has aided to fuel the improvement of an array of fields in

medicine, communication, entertainment and more importantly Education. An internet user can

access information from different individuals across the globe, communicate with their families

and friends who are miles away as well as stream music and videos at any time of the day. In the

field of education has profited the most from the World Wide Web. Online, there are numerous

educational websites which offer vast information in the form of texts, instructional videos, and

tutorials. This report reviews the importance and usefulness of websites as an educational tool.

Further, it focuses on two sites which offer educational information on computer Architecture

and design.

The article reviews two primary websites. The first websites is safaribooksonline.com.

This website offers information on an array of topics such as science, politics and computer

science. The site is full of details; however, it requires the user to create an account with a

limited free trial period (Safari, 2018). The website covers computer architecture and design in

great details. It focuses primarily towards computer science students or other users who which to

learn computer architecture and design in depth. The website might not be too appealing to users

who only need a summary of the topic. In my experience, I enjoyed the site as it was easy to

navigate and use. The availability of a search text box allows the user search any topic they

desire.

The second website concerning the subject is study.com. The site offers vast information

on different fields related to Computer Science such as 3-D animation and project creation. It is

easy to navigate as it allows the user to select their level of education; therefore, in contrast to

safaribooksonline.com, it is not primarily directed towards computer science students but to

others who might need a summary on the topic (Study.com, 2018).

In my opinion, I believe websites have been the most beneficial technological

innovations to the field education. There is an array of reasons why I believe websites are useful

educational tools. First, they are readily accessible to the user without time and geographical

constraints. The user through the touch of a button can type-in the topic they are interested in on

the search engine on their preferred computer device, smartphones or tablets. The search engine

gives out the results of the various websites that offer information on the desired topic. These

websites such as safaribooksonline.com offer different and varied perspective on the subject

where the user can download the report they deem useful to them. This approach is in contrast to

the traditional educational method of utilizing textbooks and libraries. Libraries are limited by

the time constraint; therefore, not as accessible as a website. The books, on the other hand, offer

a single perspective from the author(s) as opposed various websites.

These websites utilize different forms of media to pass on the information. The Websites

use texts, pictures, audio clips and video tutorials to educate the user. They enable the users to

access tutorial videos and even recorded classroom lectures which aid the user to understand the

topic further than in the traditional education approach. Alternatively, the study.com website

offers picture tutorial for the users to learn more about their desired subject. Different media

approaches make websites a useful educational tool as it allows the user to select the mode of

learning, video or text that they are most comfortable with; therefore, easy for them to gather and

retain the information. The websites are useful as an educational tool as they are entertaining.

Utilizing different media enable the user to maintain their attention. The inability of students to

maintain concentration during a classroom or traditional education setting Is one of the primary

hindrances towards learning. The website aids the users to maintain their attention; therefore,

being able to acquire and retain more information.

Finally, the website I believe is most useful as they allow the user to select their level of

education. Study.com enable the user to do limit the level of details they require by choosing

their level of education. The websites are continuously updated; therefore, the user has access

even to the most recent information on the topic, especially when it comes to a field such as

Computer science where the technology is continuously changing (Study.com, 2018).

In conclusion, these websites are vital when it comes to education. They serve as

additional tools to the traditional classroom setting; therefore, I do not think it can replace that

approach. Websites allow the user to understand further the concepts taught in class. In contrast

to advocating for the websites, I believe the user can be easily distracted to veer off topic and

begin to view other websites such as social media.
