What is Grading?
Grading is a defining portion of the education system nowadays. In fact, throughout the learning
process, everyone usually wants to know what he or she has captured all through and as such,
assessments and grades have come out to be rather outstanding. As a defining feature for the
same, there has also been different dimensions given by different tutors on how to go about this
and the way to gauge the understanding of the student in various laid out aspects. In as much as
there has been the importance of grading being brought out, there is a very big difference that is
mainly seen especially when it comes to the quality and the importance of these grades in
different studies. For instance, sciences and other relatable courses have defining features
towards their grading system thus making it easier for them to have grades awarded to the
students in accordance to their understanding of the different aspects being laid out. For literature
and language courses however, this is as different as there is a lot of different approaches by
different teachers on how exact they have to give their marks when it comes to their own specific
approach towards their teachings. It is because of this that there has been quite a difference in the
level of grading and how stringent the grading system is. This essay looks keenly into grading
and the various ways that many people perceive the same in the essence that one can be able to
Surname 2
understand whether through grading, there is some kind of exact portrayal of what the student
has and if the same system is truly a defining feature for their capability of understanding.
For many people, grading is usually seen to be an exact reflection of one’s understanding of a
specific aspect that is shared. However, at times, the given structure of grading might be
derailing because for some, the portrayed aspect is a small expression of their level of
understanding and thus there is minimalisation of their exact potential as it should be.
Throughout the learning process, it is usually seen to be a right way for one to try and look at
their understanding through assessments and hence there is a better chance for them to be able to
know how well they are conversant with the taught aspect. It is because of this that there has
been a given way through which this can be carried out and at the end of the day, there comes to
be the grades handed in accordance to the portraying of the understanding. Due to the fact that
Surname 3
there has been the grading system going on for a very long time, there has been the normalization
of the same together with the fact that almost every other thing in life is usually based on what
one is able to bring to the table. Today, in order for one to be able to be outstanding, he or she
has to make sure that the idea in mind is outstanding and that when compared with others, his is
the best. This is a form of grading and it brings out the exact feeling as to how the same is seen
to be just like any other normal thing today. In fact, there is such a huge normality that there
comes to be dependent on the same in various fields.
According to Belanoff, the grading system is quite intense and as such, there is high dependency
to the grading system and in as much as there is the rubric system, there is also the fluctuation
when it comes to the different fields being looked at. In fact, through her findings, English has a
lot of variation when it comes to grading especially through the different teachers and their
approach towards a specific field. Furthermore, her ideas that are linked to the vast nature of
Surname 4
grading especially when looking at students from a diverse culture and their diverse ways of
expressing their ideas through their point of view makes grading seem rather demeaning to them
since at the end of the day, their nature of expressing a specific point is not taken into
consideration and they are taken to be wrong. Bearing the fact that these facts are seen to be
rather important and meaningful for many people, there is still a lot that is kept at bay. In fact,
through the various assessments given, for some students, it is felt as though through giving the
assessments, the full potential of these students is not fully harnessed because they become
limited and just judged from what is brought to the table through the examinations and their
other knowledgeable places are ignored. For Belanoff, she did look into a whole lot of possible
approaches especially towards the grading system and how effective it is for its users. Through
her various approaches in grading, many have been able to have a better perception towards what
grading really entails and the various ways through which the same has different tolls on students
and also the way many people perceive the same thing differently.
Grading is not only limited to school and the classrooms. Today, grading is done almost in every
other place around the world. In almost each and every other different instance, there is some
kind of grading that takes place. For many people, quality is very important and as such, this
brings in the aspect of grading. For instance, in a job interview, the most qualified and the most
promising applicant is usually chosen to take the task. This vetting is usually done through a
number of questions similar to that given to students in an exam so that one can show how well
he or she can put a lot of their experience in a positive way. Even in products today, grading is
applied especially when dealing with quality. In as much as there has been grading majorly seen
in studies, there is also the essence that the same has been able to scale up to other fields. Writing
is also another field that is normally dependent on grades especially in a lot of fields. In a news
Surname 5
article, the editor tries his or her best to pick on the best news article to publish and this also
involves some kind of grading especially depending on how the reader will react. In fact, it is as
though grading today has been idolized and given a lot of priority. In a lot of given fields all
round, there is some kind of grading that is mostly framed to suit the needs highlighted on the
given cause.
For many, grades are a pain to the head because of the way they perceive the same to be quite a
measure of worth. However, basically, since the medieval times, there has been a lot of means
that have exalted grades and as such, the same has become a norm for many. With this in mind
however, even though grading is seen to be quite important, there is also a sense of how much
these grades are not really the best means through which one can really be able to expose their
understanding of a particular concept. For instance, during a given examination period, a student
gets to study a lot and try to be able to understand various possible concepts that can be asked.
However, when the said exams come, whatever is on the question paper is not the whole thing of
how he read and thus he does not really get good grades. For such a student, he had already
looked into a lot of possible instances for him to show how much potential he has but then,
because of the way he was taken through the examination process, he does not get to really bring
out the best picture to the tutor. This is a good example of how grades when used to define the
ability of a person cannot really depict a real image of the person. With that being brought out,
there is still a chance that at the end of the day, the student can make good use of the concepts he
learned out there and still come out a really great person. In fact, maybe this is why most of the
companies nowadays have chosen to take more of the B students to work for them rather than the
A ones. Ideally, grades are thought to be a defining feature for many but then, knowledge
Surname 6
nowadays is being tuned towards the concepts that have been understood and how they get
applied from time to time in the best approachable manner in order to achieve the best results.
Looking at composition grades especially, there is a big realm to have a bigger look at especially
for the one that comes out of the way the tutors believe in themselves and the way they think
their students should handle themselves in an examination. In as much as through their level of
writing and expression of ideas is different, there should be taken into consideration the fact that
at the end of the day, each and every other student has a valid idea in mind and that through their
capabilities, they have tried very hard to make sure that the same has been brought out in the best
possible way. With different tutors trying their level best to bring out these students in their own
right way, assessment of their outcomes should also be validated and taken into another
consideration since with language, there is a lot of different approaches to a specific idea.
Through grading, there is a lot of potential that is assessed and a lot of many people are taken
though a validation of what they are able to offer. The usefulness of the same is that it brings out
the importance of study and exalts the understanding abilities of a person.
