Wisdom
Wisdom and knowledge are the two terms that confuse most people due to an existing
belief that either of the two can be used in place of the other. However, a clear distinction arises
if one considers the scholarly and dictionary meanings of the two terms. Knowledge emanates
from experience, association and from the process of learning; that is, a person articulates facts
to increase his or her awareness about a particular niche. Wisdom, on the other hand, could stem
from knowledge, but it entails having a good sense of judgment or the ability to discern hidden
qualities or relationships leading to greater insight on the matter (Bangen et al. 1255). For
example, college experience provides an opportunity to gain both knowledge and wisdom, but
one is likely to acquire the former more than the latter. This paper considers how being in college
will improve my wisdom, and in turn foster the perception of life.
University or college education guides the students into an adult life since it provides
them with knowledge. However, it is up to students to decide when and where to apply the
gained knowledge. What is crucial to differentiate is that a knowledge may exist where wisdom
is missing, but the latter can exist with or without knowledge (Bangen et al. 1257). For example,
knowledge may entail having specifics when facing a given scenario, while wisdom necessitates
the use of discretion, deduction, and personal judgment to make a decision. Apart from
endowing university and college students with the knowledge, any institution plays another
important role: it provides a habitable ground to develop the young minds. For instance, during
2
examinations, students are presented with practical situations and they must apply the knowledge
they have learned in class to solve the problem. Besides, at times, a lecturer gives the
assignments which require the use of critical thinking and reflection skills, both of which
nurtures wisdom.
University or college experience is also essential to the growth of wisdom and decision-
making abilities. Unlike in high school or lower grade classes when guardians, parents and
teachers help a person to make a decision, the university’s environment is a bit different.
Students are expected to make their decisions and face the consequences of that choice in case it
backfires. University offers little or no supervision meaning that students must use their decision-
making skills to deal with life situations and any challenges they encounter. Therefore, this
freedom of choice leads to the development of wisdom. Another example of how university or
college experience fosters wisdom is when a student is required to invent or innovate a new
project that aims to solve some of the existing problems in the immediate society. Such
assignments call for wisdom since a student must think of possible ways to approach the
situation. Finally, the university’s voluntary courses on ethical and professional conduct, moral
and sound decisions, and critical thinking will introduce me to contemplative practices, which in
turn can contribute to the nurturing of wisdom.
Wisdom and knowledge have a distinct but close meaning. Considering its impact on
decision making, wisdom is an essential aspect of a person's life that defines the course one’s life
takes. The university and college education gives individuals a chance to think on their own and
even make independent decisions. Therefore, education nurtures wisdom through trial and error,
practical lessons, reflection and critical thinking, all of which improve a person’s perception and
decision-making capabilities.
