Yamashita’s treasure
It refers to the name which used to valuables and money that was allegedly stolen by the
Japanese forces in South East Asia during the Second World War. It is believed that this money
was taken from various places which include the banks, temples, museums, churches, people’s
homes and depositories. Furthermore, this money was hidden I multiple areas such as the
tunnels, caves as well as underground complexes in the Philippines. It is named after Tomoyuki
Yamashita who served as the commander of the Japanese army in the Philippines during the
Second World War. It is the general who was tasked with ensuring the treasure was hidden in the
Philippines safely. His initial plan was to first protect the money in the Philippines where he
served as the commander and later transfer it to Japan using the United States warships when
they take over. It is argued that initially, the Japanese used to ship these stole treasure unabated
until after the Japanese attack on the Pearl Harbor (Eng, 2017). This attack led to intensified
activities of the American forces targeting Japan interests, and after sinking of several Japanese
ships, they resorted to hiding the stolen valuables and money in the Philippines.
It is believed that during the war the stole money was shipped to Japan and later used to
fund the war. The team of the special forces from the United States army revealed that the
borrowed money was hidden n Philippines (Aspnes et al., 2018). It made some of the America
forces to have an extended stay in the Philippines. The Japanese troops were defeated, and when
they surrendered, they were tortured except General Yamashita. The servicemen were tortured to
reveal the areas that the hidden treasurer was. The abused Japanese officers revealed where the
stole money, and other valuables were hidden. American forces reported having recovered
astonishing treasurer hidden in the Philippines. However, most of the people in the country, as
well as the government of Philippines, denied that there ever existed a haven for Yamashita

treasure in the country. There claimed that this was a myth that never existed. A section of
experts continues to express their reservations about the existence of this treasure (Failla, 2018).
Most of them agree that during the second world war Japan was not in control of the Philippine
sea and there is no way they could use this territory they had no control over for self-gain.
However, there some witnesses who gave testimonies to affirm that the treasure was hidden in
the Philippines.
In conclusion, it is clear that the Yamashita's treasure remains a mystery to unravel with
no clear consensus on whether or not it ever existed.
